For any land that has “no maritime claim”, like Austria, the sea and nations that have coastal domains possess a mythical identity. And maritime nations that are blessed with warm climates and plentiful fishing-stock can harness this myth for the sake of tourism; it is not hard for them to attract visitors to their shores and to become, over time, familiar. (Everyone knows something about Croatia, Greece and Italy for instance). The three nations that line the Baltic – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – do not have it so easy as their climate is northern and cold and the sea no longer provides a bountiful harvest. As such the three Baltic States remain a mystery to the majority of middle-Europeans who lump them into one faraway territory – a sense that was exacerbated by the 50 years from 1940 in which they were locked-off to the world.
According to the exhibition’s co-curator Simon Rees “the exhibition Tides of Change will introduce audiences to a fascinating range of cultural references that express points of similarity and difference in the region from the perspective of contemporary art. A dominant theme in the exhibition is the development in the work of young painters of a very personal vision that is ambivalent to public symbolism typical of previous generations of art making (associated with the communist era). Exposure to these young artists’ vision will certainly strengthen certain romantic associations about the region, while providing cultural context and a critical perspective in an enjoyable way”.
Principally, this exhibition presents the work of a younger generation of artists from the three nations, most of whom have done the majority of their growing-up in independent (i.e. post-soviet) homelands and have created bodies of work depicting self-contained rather than instantly recognisable visions. Some of the pictures of the past remain but they are deployed in an individuated not idiomatic way.
The following five women artists and five men artists are taking part in the exhibition: Konstantinas Bogdanas (*1962, Lithuania), Andris Eglītis (*1981, Latvia), Merike Estna (*1980, Estonia), Daiga Krūze (*1980, Latvia), Inga Meldere (*1979, Latvia), Alina Melnikova (*1983, Lithuania), Tõnis Saadoja (*1980, Estonia), Eglė Ulčickaitė (*1989, Lithuania), Andris Vitolinš (*1975, Latvia) and Andrius Zakarauskas (*1982, Lithuania).
The HangART-7 team would like to express its gratitude for the longstanding and mutually rewarding working relationship with our friend and curator Lioba Reddeker who died recently. Lioba Reddeker was the art historian and curator responsible for the HangART-7 exhibition programme, which she worked on with great devotion - her presence will be sorely missed.
