07.06.2011 - 24.07.2011

Three special art events will take place in June 2011. Shortly after the opening of the Venice Biennale on the 4th of June, the major survey exhibition based in Berlin will begin on June 8th in various locations throughout Berlin, followed by Art Basel on June 15th. Between the 54th International Art Biennale in Venice and the 42nd edition of Art Basel, based in Berlin invites visitors from around the world to view the work of some 80 artists living and working in Berlin at five locations in the German capital.

From June 8th to July 24th, the exhibition will show—in a format exemplary for the city's dynamic art production—the work of some 80 emerging artists who were selected and compiled by the five curators Angelique Campens, Fredi Fischli, Magdalena Magiera, Jakob Schillinger and Scott Cameron Weaver after visiting more than 500 studios.

In dialogue with the curators, many of the participating artists are developing new works especially for based in Berlin. Several of Berlin's well-known project spaces were also invited to use the venues within the exhibition to present selections of their own programme.

The studio building in Monbijoupark in Berlin-Mitte is the central exhibition location and is available as a production site for the participating artists before the opening. Starting on June 8th, performances, workshops, discussions and film screenings will take place on site every evening. The events include evenings organised by Berlin art and city magazines as well as artist performances and open-air concerts. The goal of this discursive event-programme is to encourage a lively exchange between artists, institutions, project spaces, critics, curators and the public. A bar is open every evening until midnight.

Berlin has developed into one of the world's most important centers for the production of contemporary art. As a creative and cosmopolitan city, it draws many artists from Germany and abroad. For all art enthusiasts, based in Berlin is the 2011 travel destination between Venice and Basel.

Opening of based in Berlin on June 7th at 6 pm

Starting on June 8th, the studio building or so-called 'Atelierhaus at Monbijoupark', is open daily from 12 pm to 12 am. Free admission.

The exhibition continues at the following locations:
KW Institute for Contemporary Art
Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof
Neuer Berliner Kunstverein n.b.k.
Berlinische Galerie

Simultaneously to the opening of based in Berlin many of Berlin's galleries decided to collectively open new exhibitions. The opening dates will be shown in the calendar at www.basedinberlin.com

The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, provided the impetus for this exhibition within the context of the debate around the establishment of a permanent 'Kunsthalle' in Berlin. The making of the exhibition has been accompanied by three advisors: Klaus Biesenbach (New York), Christine Macel (Paris) and Hans Ulrich Obrist (London).
