| Ai, who is currently exhibiting in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in London, said in a phone interview with the Daily Telegraph, “They asked me not to go and to tell everyone the party was off, but I said I couldn’t do that and they’d have to stop me. So now they talked [to] their superiors and came back to say I’m officially under house arrest.” Nearly a thousand people were expected to attend the party at Ai’s Shanghai studio, which earlier last week was served with a demolition notice after being designated an illegal structure for failing to have a prior planning license. Ai who says he was twice personally invited by the mayor of the Shanghai district to build the studio, said he believed the real reason for demolition order was because of his activities supporting dissidents. “This [being placed under house arrest] just shows how the government [is] so simple. There is no free press in China, there is no independent judiciary and no way to debate or disagree with the government. That’s why they must send the police to do a job like this,” said Ai.
