| "Suspended ceilings, laminate floors, plastic windows, and fluorescent light bulbs - a set of falsifications required for real life," - this is the working premise of the installation "Sheltering Sky", eloquently defined by the author himself in the exhibition brochure.
The essence of Eriks Bozis' creative work is an ironic play with physical space and our perceptions, manipulation with everyday things and ordinary situations. The artist very discreetly and unobtrusively invites us to look at well-known things from a different perspective. The items that the author dares to transform into art installations are the discordant hybrids of our contemporary standardized environment - suspended ceilings, metal grids on the terraces of block buildings, the visual icons of the navigation systems and other trappings that for the average middle class Latvian serve as symbols of prosperity, shelter, security, and even create a homelike feeling. | |

| A suspended ceiling - something we have seen a thousand times - is one of the major consumer standards of the quality of life. Its main function is to cover all defects. Here it has suddenly lost its bogus horizontal stability, and in an almost weightless manner glides in the expanse of the space. "Click" - and our awareness tunes into another way of thinking: whether we want it or not, this offset of reality draws us into games with our perception and mind. Despite the monstrously brutal form and a totally illogical essence, the installation "Sheltering Sky" is a very emotional creation. Speaking rationally, the lopsided suspended ceiling with its flickering bluish fluorescent light fixture hanging at Andrejsala Hull Shop does not have any figurative parallels with the creative work of one of the most romantic Italian film directors Bertolucci. But if we think irrationally, perhaps the story is the same - unfulfilled dreams, longing, fear, a yearning to be loved, understood and protected, yet in another un-time and un-place. /Translator into English: Anita Načisčione/ | |
