Gints Gabrāns. Exhibition “Paramirrors” Ieva Kalniņa, Art Historian The exposition of the Republic of Latvia at the 52nd International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia
|
| Artist Gints Gabrāns has combined the practice of art and science, mysticism and esotericism into a unified, integral working method. His works direct us to the energy that expresses the human being's inner essence, contrasting it with the opinion that identifies one's inner essence with thinking, emotion and sensual perception. This transformation of psychic energy is the way that universal human and fundamental questions are raised. We might say that the artist works with the realization of the impossible in the attempt to show the invisible, while reminding us that what we see is exactly that. To understand the invisible, one must look at the visible. |

| Gabrāns' exposition "Paramirrors" was concerned with the altered states of consciousness brought about by light. To be more specific, polarised light reflected by mirrors was used. Venice is an ideal location to create associations with mirrors, as the city itself is reflected in its waters and canals. Thus it seems only natural that Venice should be the birthplace of the smooth crystal mirror.
The exposition "Paramirrors" was divided into several sequential levels. The first level dealt with the physiological effects of light as depicted in the work "Beauty Mirror". Using special filters, the mirror reflects light within the so called therapeutic spectrum of light wave-band (600 to 1400 nm). Passing through the epidermis, this reflected light can reach the dermis (the deeper layers of the skin). Working at cell level, the light improves the microcirculation to rejuvenate and beautify facial skin. The physical properties of light used in the work "Beauty Mirror" were aligned to the physical indicators of a European-certified light therapy method which is used in beauty salons and clinics. The next level of the exposition dealt with the level of form, rendered in the work "Space Membrane". The exposition was concluded with altered levels in the state of consciousness, as expressed in the works "Parahypnosis" and "Parallel Space. Psycholaser".
